Cycling across the Channel for The Running Charity

À PROPOS

A cycle with a purpose

This June I'm cycling from London to Paris for The Running Charity. Three days whisking through stunning countryside, soaking in the summer sun, with nothing but my legs and mind to get me from one beautiful European capital to another. As if this wasn't good enough already, I'll be supporting an inspiring young British charity which is changing the lives of young people at risk of homelessness in the UK. My aim is to raise £1000 to help The Running Charity continue its amazing work, but I can't do this without your help. Read on to learn more about The Running Charity and my European cycling adventure.

COURS

What is The Running Charity?

Breaking the cycle of youth homelessness in the UK

The Running Charity was founded by James Gilley when he lost a homeless friend to a heroin overdose in 2011. Using his passion for running, he set up a charity to help homeless and vulnerable young people overcome addictions and mental health issues, and take back control of their lives. The Running Charity provides regular fitness and coaching sessions with qualified trainers to disadvantaged young people aged 16 to 24, with the aim of increasing their confidence and work toward concrete goals through running.

The charity's inspirational and impactful work has been recognised by David Cameron, who named James a UK Point of Light in June 2014. This prestigious award recognises outstanding individual volunteers who are making a change in their community. In the words of the Prime Minister:

James's idea is both unique and hugely valuable for young people battling addiction. The 2012 Olympics showed us how sport can leave a lasting positive legacy. Thanks to people like James this spirit lives on.

Based in London and Manchester with plans to further expand, The Running Charity (formerly SPAT, Social Purpose and Time) is turning lifestyles around. 91% of participants in its programmes enter education, training or employment upon completion, and 95% significantly reduce or stop using drugs and alcohol.

It is a privilege to be fundraising for such an inspirational charity.

My passion for cycling

The cycle

I have been cycling for as long as I can remember. Over the years I've bicycled, unicycled and penny-farthinged whenever the opportunity has presented itself. This summer I want to push myself, for a good cause, and attempt a route I've always has my sights on. Half-English, half-French, I can think of few things more fulfilling than travelling between the capitals of my home countries with nothing but my legs and mind to keep me going.
I plan to complete this amazing journey mid-June, over a period of three days. I will be posting updates on the trip and pictures of my training on this website. Stay tuned to follow my preparations!

Want to get involved?

If, like me, you feel inspired by The Running Charity's life-changing work, please support my cross-Channel cycle by donating what you can on my Virgin Giving page. I will be extremely grateful for any support you can provide. Every penny raised will go directly to this impactful charity, as I will be covering my own expenses during the trip.

Thank you.
